Ontario
Pathways Board Member and railfan Pete Peterson will lead
a bike ride on the Lehigh Valley Trail through
the Town of Mendon to the Rochester Junction. The
ride, which will begin at 10:00 am, is approximately twelve
and one-half miles and should take no more than two hours,
tops. Pete will also throw in, at no charge, a bit of history on the Lehigh
Valley Railroad.
Our adventure
will begin at the parking lot on Old Dutch Road in the
Town of Victor. (click here for a google map
to the trailhead)
From Route 96 in Victor go west, towards
Mendon, on route 251. Old Dutch Road is on your right in
about three miles; the next right after Wagnum Road and
just past Ted Collins
Landscaping. The parking lot is on your left in about three-tenths
of a mile.
The trail
is perfectly flat, with a wide packed stone dust surface; very easy
riding. There is an excellent chance we may encounter deer
or or other wildlife along the trail. Helmets are encouraged
for adults and a must
for children 14 and under.
Our
destination is Rochester Junction, where trains from
Rochester met the LV mainline.
The Mendon Foundation, caretaker
of the Trail, and scout groups have done quite a bit of
work at the Junction. In addition to "knee-high" restorations
and an information kiosk, there is a short scenic walking
path to the banks of Honeoye
Creek.
In
the event of bad weather, the event may be postponed
to Sunday the 27th. Contact Pete Peterson at 585-671-3882
for information or
to "sign up" for the ride.
Please
register in advance.
