The Ontario Pathways trail is built on abandoned railroad beds. This makes it mostly flat with only gentle hills except for a couple of detours around private property. The surface is primarily grass with a bare single track of packed cinders down the center. In heavily wooded areas the grass is shaded out leaving just the packed cinders. For bicycling a mountain bike or hybrid is preferred over a skinny tire road bike.

The trail is open without detours from Canandaigua east to Stanley and then north to Orleans. Just north of Orleans the railroad bed is blocked by private property, see the trail map for detours to return to the trail at Wheat Rd. From Wheat Rd. the trail continues north to Phelps.
